What is Vintage Lucite?

~Lucite is an extremely durable plastic material that was developed by the DuPont chemical company in the 1930s.

~It was initially designed for military uses, such as windshields and the noses on fighter planes.

~When DuPont introduced Lucite to the fashion industry, the costume-jewelry industry quickly embraced it in the 1950s.

~Over in Europe, in the 1950s, West Germany set out to rebuild the economy of Germany and became the world’s third largest economy. A large part of that success was due to the production and manufacturing of Lucite goods, like costume jewelry.

~Around the same time, Japan and Hong Kong jumped on the bandwagon and started making their own style of Lucite and acrylic beads and jewelry.

~Popularity and styles grew for this costume jewelry material through the 1960s.

~Lucite fell by the wayside during the 1970s, but made a comeback in the 1980s.

~Many decades have passed and now, collectors can’t get enough of Lucite! Especially the beads!!

~The beads are hard to come by, due to a finite supply of Vintage Lucite beads out there.

~When you find a Lucite bead that speaks to you, listen. It has a story to tell, and if you pass it by, you will probably never get the chance again to make it yours.

~Vintage Lucite is not an old type of plastic. It is an important piece of our fashion and pop-culture history.

~Wear your Vintage Lucite jewelry loud and proud!
